Take a Personal SWOT Analysis
& Grow Your Career

For decades, SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis has been a simple yet powerful B-school model MBA students use to analyze the strategic positions of companies, products or business situations.

You can size up the state of your career by taking a page from the business-school playbook and apply a SWOT analysis on your acting, filmmaking, writing, directing and producing career.

SWOT refers to your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.  In a SWOT Analysis you analyze your strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities and use that information to develop a strategy for how you’re going to REALLY reach your goals, and to increase your chances for REAL success.

Conducting a Self-SWOT analysis with regularity is, in my opinion, the single most effective ‘power tool’ you can use to optimize your career and keep moving you towards your goal.  It will help you identify, hone and leverage marketable, unique and beneficial qualities (strengths and weaknesses) that may help or hinder you and your career.  It will also help minimize external obstacles (opportunities and threats) that may work for or against you as you attempt to take your career to the next level, and that you must overcome to achieve your goals.

You have to start your SWOT analysis with a goal. Then examine your current situation. What are your personal strengths and weaknesses? How can you capitalize on your strengths and overcome your weaknesses? What are the external opportunities and threats in the entertainment industry that could cause you trouble?

Your STRENGTHS may include things like being an experienced producer or director, having a strong Rolodex, access to well known actors, a strong team, access to capital, and a presale or distributor already in place.  WEAKNESSES may include the areas where you and your team lacks experience, knowledge and proper planning, and not knowing anyone in the industry.

External factors signal potential OPPORTUNITIES such as filling a void in the marketplace, developing trends, possible cross promotion or affiliate programs, possible alternative streams of revenue such as soundtrack, merchandise, hybrid self-distribution, and THREATS such as the number of similar films competing for the same audience, not being able to raise capital in down economy.

You can also apply a SWOT analysis to projects you’re working on.  I regularly use it as a tool to help my filmmaker clients analyze their film and media projects, and the results are amazing!

If you’re experiencing challenges such as finding funding for your project, securing distribution, getting representation, booking auditions, access to talent for your film and media projects, and developing meaningful relationships through networking, a SWOT analysis will help you analyze everything and anything that’s going on in your career to give you a clear picture of where your career stands and how to move towards reaching your goals.

What I love about the SWOT analysis is that it forces you to consider the factors that you can control — your strengths and weaknesses — and shows you how to capitalize on them; and then takes it a step further by making you think about the external factors — opportunities and threats — that affect the health and direction of your career and projects.

Once to sit down and do this analysis, you’ll have a clear picture of where you are in your career, and from there it will help you develop strategies for taking advantage of your strengths and opportunities, and mitigating your weaknesses and reducing threats.  SWOT is a uniquely creative way to think about where you are in your career and the directions you should take.  When you apply SWOT to your film or media project, you develop greater insight into building your message and all of developing your financing, marketing and distribution tactics.
