Success is in the Follow-Up

A few days ago I was reminded how important follow-up is.  I ran into someone I had met at a week-long conference over a year ago.  We hung out the entire week and talked in-depth about several business opportunities.  When I got home, I got busy doing other things and forget to follow-up with her.  She had been waiting for me to follow-up but since I didn’t, I missed out on a huge business opportunity and a couple of grand.  Damn!  Now I’m trying to rebuild the relationship.  As often as I preach it, sometimes I fall short myself and this was a hard lesson to learn.
So I wanted to reach out and remind you that … Success is in the follow-up!  One reason so many don’t meet with the success they anticipate is because of poor follow-up skills.
And what’s so sad is that follow-up isn’t as hard as it seems and only takes a few minutes of your time.  And it’s so simple.  Just send a brief email following any meetings, meals, etc.  And I mean brief.  Say how much you enjoyed meeting them (or talking to them), and that you will be following up on your discussions shortly.   This way they get something from you immediately which is a great gesture, and you are telling them to expect to hear more from you.  You are also putting the onus on them to reply.  A lot of people don’t follow up right away because they feel they have to pitch something, or send something, or do something grand.  Not the case.  A simple gesture is all that you need to extend at this point.

Follow-up, follow-up, follow-up!
